Tech staffing unicorn Andela is buying a smaller industry peer, as startups are looking to combine amid a tough funding market

Andela, the remote tech­ni­cal tal­ent start­up last val­ued at $1.5 bil­lion, is acquir­ing the engi­neer­ing tal­ent assess­ment plat­form Qual­i­fied, the CEOs of both com­pa­nies told Insid­er exclusively.

Found­ed in 2014 with an ini­tial focus on train­ing and hir­ing African engi­neers, Andela now con­nects com­pa­nies with remote tech­ni­cal work­ers in 170 coun­tries world­wide. Qual­i­fied, led by cofounder and CEO Jake Hoffn­er, arose from a cod­ing com­pe­ti­tion site called Code­wars, which has grown into a com­mu­ni­ty of more than 3.6 mil­lion engi­neers, Hoffn­er said.
