Childhood obesity in America has significantly increased in the past 3 decades. According to 2015–2016 reports by the Center For Disease Control And Prevention 1 in 5 children between the ages 6 and 19 years old are obese, tripling the number of obese children reported in the 1970s. This trend and its impact on learning inspired Kirsten Saenz Tobey and Kristin Groos Richmond to set out on a mission to transform the way students are fed by starting Revolution Foods.
Before founding Revolution Foods, Richmond who previously had a career in corporate finance had co-founded the Kenya Community Center for Learning. She also served on the White house Council for Community Solutions. Tobey was a teacher, researcher and garden educator with Earthjustice, the School for Field Studies, and Phillips Academy at Andover. She had also led experiential educational programs in the US and Ecuador.
